I enjoyed the first half of this book more, the second half felt overly long and drawn out and needed a good editing. I also REALLY didn't like all the religious undertones and the constant need to mention "Our Lord" and get bible quotes in.
Evelyn felt quite feisty and likeable in the beginning but seemed to completely sell herself out once she realised she was "in love" and the author resorted to all the old tropes that a woman needs a man to escape a bad situation, and that a woman gets herself through life with high heels and a shapely leg.
I did find the narrative interesting in that it was taking place in the year leading up to the outbreak of WWII, but this is not an author I will read again, despite this being one of my favourite periods for historical fiction
