Malibu Rising by Taylor Jenkins Reid

4.0

“ August,1983, it is the day of Nina Riva's annual end-of-summer party, and anticipation is at a fever pitch. Everyone who is anyone wants to be around the famous Rivas: surfer and supermodel Nina, brothers Jay and Hud, and their adored baby sister Kit. Together, the siblings are a source of fascination in Malibu and the world over - especially as the children of the legendary singer Mick Riva.

By midnight the party will be completely out of control.

By morning, the Riva mansion will have gone up in flames. “

This is a story about love, family and ambition. The book flits from the siblings now, on the day of the party - and back in time to their parents love story.

With the wonderfully described Malibu setting, this book is pure escapism and the perfect beach read. I found some parts of the Siblings’ stories in the present day a little lacking as I particularly enjoyed (and preferred) the flashbacks to the past, however I still felt you were able to get to know then enough.

I felt the house fire at the end brought the book to a bit of a weak fizzle instead of a dramatic bang which surprised me as there was a bit of a build up, but nonetheless it felt rounded off enough, just a bit flat.

This is the first TJR book I read and I much preferred it to the second, Evelyn Hugo - I was very surprised at how much I didn’t like it after having enjoyed this one as much as I did, but there you go! If you’re after some family drama in a lush setting with hints of glamour and intrigue then this one may be worth a try
