The Kremlin's Candidate by Jason Matthews
4.0
Overall, a good read. However, there are some rather unusual continuity and logic errors present:
Dominika was shown a photo of SUSAN and told SUSAN is an editor at “big liberal magazine in Manhattan”... in their meet, SUSAN tells her how hard it is to be an editor. At 1st meeting with Gable @ Turkish Cuisine, she doesn’t tell him about SUSAN being an editor, but describes SUSAN. At meeting w/ gable on Hudson St, she says she doesn’t know what SUSAN looks like, and Westfall somehow knows about SUSAN working at a “leading literary magazine” without having been told.e
D was tailed by Blokhin and almost seen meeting with Gable, D said she was “clean” but never thought of transponders in clothing, tracking devices, or the rather elaborate idea of radioactive tracking, even though she’s the Chief of CI and would certainly be aware of all of these. They choose to meet to hand off the phone rather than a safer dead drop.
She’s tracked again at the mall, but still has meeting planned with Gable.
When COPPERFIN starts getting rolled up, Benford tells Gable that MAGINT either works or has worked on the rail gun project, and that the news MAGINT is moving up to a policy level job “widens the field”.. This is backwards - it significantly NARROWS the list of people the mole could be. Adding items to disqualify people can only REDUCE the total number, not INCREASE it.
When D meets the agent in Moscow, he gives her an always-on transmitting beacon in the form of a watch she is to wear at all times and tells her it “frequency hops so it can’t be geolocated”. Still, one would assume that the guards at the door of FSB headquarters (who, like the CIA currently does, would certainly have a Digital Transmission Detector scanning everyone entering) might wonder why their Chief of Counterintelligence is wearing a watch broadcasting a signal strong enough to be picked up by satellite.
