Into the Darkest Corner by Elizabeth Haynes
5.0
Holy crap is all I have to say after finishing the final pages of this book.. I don't think I've even been so invested in a story before, and so completely disgusted and yet needing to know what happens next. I couldn't put this book down. The only bad things I have to say about this book is that, yes the first 30 pages are so confusing and you don't really know what's going on. It's really hard to keep up with it when it's switching back and forth from one year to the next, but you eventually get used to it and it becomes easier. At times, it got repetitive with her anxiety and OCD, but now after finishing it, I realize that it was necessary for all those scenes to happen. The intensity and suspense doesn't really happen until at least 200 pages into it, but it allows for character development, which this author does a great job with. This author really takes her time with showing just how paranoid and damaged Catherine is, and I appreciate that a lot. You really get to know these characters and their behaviors so well, it's incredible. This is by far the most disturbing, and graphically violent story I've ever read, and at times I couldn't believe what was happening I was so shocked. But I appreciate stories that are so intriguing like this, that I get so emotionally invested in. I don't think I've ever hated a character as much as I hate Lee. The ending of this book is so terrifying and haunting in the best way. It was such a clever and creative and creepy way to end this story and it literally sent chills up my spine. I was sad when I finished it because I needed to know more. I didn't expect much when I first got this book, and now I can say it's one of my favorites of all time. Sure, it's a dark book, but it's also very intense and interesting, and that's what I love the most about it. Not to mention, Stuart is such a like-able character. Also I found it fascinating that the first half of this book feels like a romance, and then it so quickly turns into a thriller, and the mood changes so easily back and forth, but it doesn't feel forced. This book exceeded my expectations and it was an incredible read. I could only hope there will be a sequel.
