Possession by A.S. Byatt
5.0
I will be singing praises to Possession by A. S. Byatt here because it is a magnificent postmodernist romance. The book is a 1990 Booker winner and justly so. It is a mesmerising story inside a story that holds you from start to finish.
The narrative is being moved by two young literary academics, who try to discover the truth behind the love correspondence of two Victorian poets. If you are into Victoriana, you will love Possession!
And there is the romance of a detective story - it’s like Indiana Jones in literature.
Possession also touches my very personal notes. If I’d read it before I finished my studies in the university, I would have maybe made it to the academia (in my major - literature), because literary science is described here with so much love and excitement. I decided not to continue though, specifically, as the author suggests in the novel - studying an author is like living somebody else’s life all the time.
I highly recommend it if you love romance, literary puzzles, history, poetry (because there is a great number of original Victorian-style poetry in this novel), and books about books.
