The comments I had read together with the book synopsis led me to believe this would be a highly amusing tale of time-travelling historians who kept getting into one historical pickle after another, which isn't exactly how it panned out.
The story abounds with rye humour and highly entertaining comments and descriptions of events or people, one of my favourites being "xxx's got a face like a buggered Badger", the xxx, being a name which I have not added so as not to spoil its impact for you. However, the story is quite dark at times, with several emotional moments which hit fairly hard, mixed in with a lot of action scenes, some of which are a bit gruesome, a fair amount of tension and more than a little mystery to boot, all of which gave this a depth I was not expecting, which in turn made it even more engaging and enjoyable.
