An Ember in the Ashes by Sabaa Tahir
5.0
**REREAD July 2024**
Still an excellent book. Going to finsih the series in time for Heir
********
5 Stars, already have the next book saved in my library.
I found this book really easy to read. I’ve struggled a lot with short term memory loss recently due to stress, so I am quick to shelf a book I don’t understand asap. It's not worth my time to struggle through a story I am not absorbing. I was a sponge during the whole read.
Spoiler
What I loved
-Easy flow read
-I enjoyed watching Laila find her confidence. She constantly says she's not brave at all but she's a warrior right from the start.
-It’s not quite an enemies to lovers story but it is. The only thing between them is their place in the world. Elias never dislikes Laila and never mistreats her. Laila only dislikes Elias due him being a mask. Romance isn’t a big theme in the book but it's just enough to keep my romantic side entertained.
-Fight scenes were easy to get through. I tend to zone out during long fights so this was short enough to hold my attention.
-While Elias is already somewhat uncomfortable with the way things are run from the start he constantly struggles to do the right thing while also following the rules.
TW: threats of rape
I did find the constant threats of rape towards one of the charactors disturbing. I do hope in the following books nothing comes of it and will be very disappointed if it does. If anyone finds story lines around rape confronting maybe give this one a miss or read it on a good day. SpoilerWhile it IS only threats, she also admits to having a vision of the rape during a ‘test’ and by the end of the book SPOILER, does fall directly under his rule.
