The Glass Menagerie by Tennessee Williams
5.0
I’m not into plays generally, and this one was my first in a very long time and read out of my own free will without any pressure from my literature professors. And Oh my how I loved it! It is such a delicate piece, like a creature of glass. I almost cried of tenderness and sadness in the end.
The characters are nicely built and the dialogues are great. The screen device was a bit unusual, but I liked the way it added a bit of action to the play and stressed the idea of movement, like in “movies” or “to move.”
There was definitely a lot of cultural background that I missed or wasn’t sure of, like music and references to the history of the South (wasn’t Amanda remembering her life before the Civil War?), which only adds to the depth of the play. Am looking forward to read more from Tennessee Williams!
