Stuck In A Hotel With A Vampire: A Standalone Paranormal Romance by Mila Moore
3.0
Rating: 3.5/5 Penguins (rounded down)
Quick Reasons: vampire steam!; some weird loopholes in the plot; entertaining read; quick and easy to devour; some common "tropes" for the vampire lore
HUGE thanks to Mila Moore for the ARC copy of this title! My review of this book is voluntarily written and in no way altered or impacted by this gesture.
"Family is important, but traditions are just peer pressure from dead people. They're dead, they can't bother you," Bailey said. Ross burst into laughter, a loud honk of a sound that even had a few of the other nearby guests turn towards them. Bailey smiled in confusion--had it been that funny?
This was a fun, quick, quirky read from author Mila Moore. The characters were compelling and realistic, the motivations were clear and well-considered, and the story (for the most part) worked well given the constraints of the setting (stuck in a hotel during a bad snowstorm). I giggled, I gasped, and I could not put this down once I started!
There were a few places where some weird loopholes played into the journey that totally altered the events that played out, and I had a hard time setting aside my disbelief for those moments. For instance...we are told by Ross that it is illegal to tell humans about the vampire world, and can end in the human being killed for knowing too much. This is entirely the reason he decides to "step away" from Bailey in the first place--to keep her safe, even though she knows too much. BUT THEN......THEN certain things happen, and suddenly it's all perfectly acceptable and okay that another human learn the truth in order to "save" them? Ross even gets permission to do so?!?!?! This part really confused me, and felt more like the easy way to "close out" that loop of the story. And by the end of the story....it's known that Bailey knows of the vampires, but it seems nobody really actually cares?
"You did the best that you could with what you knew, and it didn't work out, but that doesn't mean it's meaningless."
STILL! This was a fun, sometimes steamy, definitely entertaining read. I recommend this to vampire romance lovers, those looking for a "winter setting" read, and anyone who's seeking something quick and easy to settle into. This journey is bound to keep you on your toes, Penguins--check it out!
