I love ESSAYS? How exemplary this persuasive essay, shockingly relevant 60 years later. He writes with great optimism, only some of it justified with the benefit of historical hindsight; but perhaps, though not all his predictions were right, the optimism was in fact all justified. Perhaps it was integral. I was deeply affected by this writing, prose as well as argument, and hope to visit it again. In the meanwhile off to read more James Baldwin.
