This book is so unique and the tone of it really reminded me of Toni Morrison, which is so fun to find in more contemporary writing. I really enjoyed the Caribbean aspect of it as well.
However, this was a thick book and I struggled to remain evenly engaged throughout. The premise is fantastic and the writing is just a pleasure to read, but the story tends to wander a bit. I also sometimes struggle to keep track of a large cast of characters, but usually a third of the way through I’m good, but I struggled with this all the way through. That is not an indictment of the authors storytelling abilities, but of my inability to remain in engaged.
Overall, I think this story is very impressive and so unique. I would definitely recommend for someone looking for magical realism without a Eurocentric setting, which is, unfortunately, very rare.
