Wow! I started this on my flight home from Montana (not knowing that a large part of this book takes place in - you guessed - Montana!) and I devoured half of it on the flight and the other half last night trying to distract myself from the tornado warnings surrounding me.
FUNNY YOU SHOULD ASK has been on my shelf since it came out and for some reason, I had never picked it up and I have RAGRETS. Which is to say, you should read this immediately and stop putting it off like I did!
As an avid contemporary romance reader, if I had to describe this book in one word, I think I would say: refreshing. This is a story that has been told a million times before - a small town boy who makes it big as a movie star in Hollywood falls for an unsuspecting, "normal" girl. Regardless, Sussman's voice felt so unique and raw. This book has soooo many typical tropes that sometimes we bore of in the genre but in FYSA, they work! The book is essentially one big miscommunication trope and while that would typically turn me off from a book, it makes so much sense for the characters here. The MC's are in their 40s, have experienced trauma, have lived a lot of life, and have understandably raised their guards towards love and one another. Gabe is a very famous actor and if everything had fell together perfectly without some silly misunderstandings I don't think the story would have felt as real or as honest.
If you are a fan of Emily Henry or Taylor Jenkins Reid I think you will LOVE this book. I cannot wait to see what else we get from Elissa Sussman!
