Raven spent her childhood being experimented on and tortured in a lab. Because of that experimentation, she is extremely powerful and was able to escape, free the other captives, and destroy in the lab in the process. Now she's in hiding, living with the other escapees, and determined to fight for those who can't fight for themselves. Her group continues to track and try and destroy labs and she consults with the police on paranormal cases. She becomes an accidental alpha, claiming two members for her pack: Durant (tiger) and Taggert (wolf). Jackson (wolf) is eagerly waiting to be the third member and there's a hint of prior romance between her and Rylan (vampire). Her recent police investigation pulls her into danger when some demented humans capture her and Taggert. These humans hunt, rape, and kill paranormals for a thrill. Raven and her men end up escaping and eliminating the threat. However, Jackson's pack has recalled him before Raven could mark what is hers. The book ends with her endeavoring to get Jackson back through appealing to the council, while two unknown paranormals show up at her house looking for sanctuary.

This is a must-read for anyone who loves the Anita Blake series by Laurel K. Hamilton, as long as you won't be too annoyed with the many similarities. I could list all the similarities here but it wouldn't do this book justice. It's an updated version of Anita Blake without all the slow build up of the main character becoming powerful and falling in love with the monsters. It's like we start in book 7 of Anita Blake...just before it gets interesting.
