Go, Went, Gone by Jenny Erpenbeck
5.0
I’m always amazed by the skill of translators when reading a really spectacular foreign language book. Go, Went, Gone’s language is so intricate and lyrical - the task of translation must have been Herculean technically while also a major creative undertaking. It’s so, so well done. From concept, to character development, to historical details, to plot - I absolutely loved this book. It was horrifying and heartbreaking, but ultimately a beautiful read that puts the European refuge crisis into clear focus in a way that’s disturbingly familiar to an American audience. There is so much going on here, but ultimately this is a story about compassion - it brought me to tears (in public) more than once.
