I received a copy of this book from Netgalley in exchange for an honest review.
The cover of this book drew me in and the synopsis is what ultimately made me request to read this book. It sounded absolutely incredible! Sadly, I didn’t get any further than 4% into the book before I just simply couldn’t do it anymore. And that’s saying a lot for me because it’s extremely rare that I don’t finish a book or at least try to get as far as possible before giving up.
If the synopsis would have included a sample of the writing, I would have moved along and not requested the book. Molly narrates the book and her voice is incredibly juvenile. When I discovered from other reviews that the style of writing didn’t improve, I decided it wasn’t worth it. I can read some of the more juvenile narrations, but this was just too much. It felt forced and over the top, as if the author was trying to channel her inner teenager and overdid it. It’s almost insulting because I don’t think the author needed to have Molly be quite so “and like whatev” in order to tell her story from a young adult POV. It’s a shame because I really would have liked to see where the story went.
“It was a mondo ick mess. Finally, Anubis went deep into the Underworld and got some badass magic. We’re talking magic so ancient and powerful, it wasn’t supposed to leave the world of the gods, like, ever.”
This is how Molly narrates EVERYTHING. I don’t understand why, because it takes away all of the magic of the story.
Now, if this style of writing doesn’t bother you, then I’m sure Undeadly is a great book. Everything about it told me it should have been a wonderful story. Ultimately, I thought the premise was intriguing, but badly executed.
