Carmilla by J. Sheridan Le Fanu

Believed to be one of the earliest vampire stories, the fact that it predated Dracula was enough to pique my interest.
A very fast-paced story with gothic elements that I loved, yet it still sounded (or felt) too….monotone? But then again, just knowing that it was first published in the late eighteen hundreds as individual stories in a newspaper makes me want to like it more.
Oh, and the illustrations were pretty.
