Listen for the Lie by Amy Tintera

4.0

Lucy is the top suspect in her best friend's murder. Everyone knows she did it. The problem? Lucy herself has no memory of what happened that night.

I really enjoyed the format of the novel. Five years after her friend's death, Lucy is reluctantly back in town for her grandma's birthday. The story of what really happened that night slowly unfolds as Lucy revisits old "friends" and locations in parallel with hearing excerpts from a true crime podcast about the case. I should note that listening to this as an audiobook was great, especially for the podcast parts.

Lucy is a unique character. She's a say-it-like-it-is type of person with a dry, dark, and sarcastic sense of humor. It made it easy to see why others were quick to focus on her as a suspect. Still, I found that I couldn't help but root for her.

A gripe I have is that there is A LOT of cheating all around. I get that it helped make it so that none of the characters were angels and it muddied the relationships for the sake of the story, but it just felt icky. Other than that and a few other small things, it was an intriguing, easy to read story with some twists I didn't see coming!
