Animals We Are, Book One: by Valerie Brandy

4.0

Valerie Brandy's debut novel "Animals We Are" is an intense survival thriller. It follows Zoe and Mike's journey, who find themselves at a crucial roundabout in their relationship. They decide to head to Yosemite, but things take a drastic turn. Mike disappears, leaving more questions in Zoe's mind. Does she truly know the man that she's falling for? In addition to this, there is an additional layer added of Zoe discovering herself and facing her inner demons. The descriptions used throughout to bring the natural landscapes to life are compelling and vivid. I appreciate that this story isn't a typical one where the woman is a damsel in distress. What stood out to me is Zoe's inner thoughts and reflections as a woman, finding her voice by challenging her habits and learning to trust again and give herself a chance to experience love. Discovering and reconciling with her inner animal and her insights on the interconnectedness with the Great Everything was compelling and thoughtful. The ending is a cliff hanger, and I look forward to reading book two. A 4 star read!
