So, let's start by saying the topic of this book is a difficult one.
R. F. Kuang never fails to disappoint me, but this novel made me think.
American author June Hayward has a very difficult and party toxic relationship with the very successful asian-american author Athena Liu. As she watched her die (by choking on a pancake, such a difficult and horrifying scene to read) she stole her Manuskript to 'The last front'.
So, here it goes: I knew the whole time, that her actions were so wrong, but at the same time, June confinced herself that is was the right thing to do and therefore also influenced my opinion.
She profited of her friends hard-work and although she worked on the book very hard, it just was wrong to lie and never give Athena credit for the novel.
She also had a questionable moral. On the one hand, she accused Athena of stealing her words for her books, but on the other hand she did exactly the same!
I also found it really fotting, that her guilt haunts her in form of Athenas ghost, which turned out to be Candice!
In general, this book touches so many topics, on which I feel I have no real right to talk about, but one topic I have to say something:
I understand the feeling that diversity is the key. I often have the feeling as if being 'only' german, white or whatever is so - boring or white or whatever ...
But that doesn't make her actions morally aceptable!
All in all, this book is very meaningful to a lot of people and I still need time to process everything ...
