The Second We Met by Maya Hughes

3.0

"One second we’re cool and the next you’re biting my damn head off. It’s been like this since the second we met."

A short and sweet sports romance!

❦ The Writing ❦
I want to talk about the writing style first because I think that was by far my biggest issue. I didn’t enjoy the way the writing was formatted, with a ton of repetitive description rather than taking. It was basically like “this happened, then this, and then I did this…” and after a while, it got a bit repetitive.

❦ Nix and Elle ❦
I really enjoyed Nix and Elle as characters as well as a couple! Particularly Elle, I loved her arc and how strong and steadfast she was throughout the book. On the other hand, I did expect a bit more from Nix considering how intriguing he was in book one, but that isn’t to say he wasn’t a good character. I liked how he followed his dreams and was so kindhearted, but I guess I just wanted a bit more passion from him. On a happier note, despite the fact that they were the couple I had the lowest expectations for in this series, their romance was overall exciting and sweet, and I loved their banter early on.

I’d hefted a championship trophy over my head, but this felt like a win I’d never forget. My first completely unprompted smile from her lit me up like a damn Christmas tree.

❦ Side Characters ❦
As much as I liked Nix and Elle, it was definitely the side characters who stole the show. At this point, I am so excited for both BerkJules and LJMarissa’s books, because their interactions in this book were incredible! I can’t wait to continue with this series.

A knock on the gate saved us all from the abject awkwardness that had settled over our group. Berk jumped up, nearly spilling his plate on the ground. “Jules!” he announced to everyone in a three-block radius.
