Only Child by Rhiannon Navin

What I Liked
Zach's voice is a powerful one. He is a first grader whose fourth-grade brother Andy was killed in a mass school shooting.

My favorite part of this book was its aversion from politics but rather its focus on how children and families process grief together.

I also appreciated the reality of emotions when the "hardest" member of the family, someone who had oppositional defiant disorder and really caused the family hurt and struggle when he was alive, is the one who dies. Zach struggles as he watches people turn Andy into a hero, even though they did not treat him well when he was alive.

What I Didn't Like
The final big moment of Zach's does seem a little over-the-top, although it was certainly touching. The ability for a six-year-old to be able to have such an impact on the relationships around him also seemed like a stretch, although this was also heart-warming.
