The Dollmaker by Amanda Stevens
4.0
It wasn't bad, but it wasn't amazing either. The beginning of the story is not only slow but REALLY confusing. And main characters are all too plain.
I also didn't like some stuff that wasn't "closed", like all the Travis issue and what happened to him (as a reader, I know, but the case was never closed for his girlfriend). And I wished they would explain a bit more about EXACTLY what happened to Matthew´s Family and to Ruby. Because that is not really explained but hinted. I would also like to get an Epilogue with the Savaria case resolution -what happened to the cops-.
And I would definitely like a confirmation on the identity of the "mysterious woman who visited the gallery" -even if readers can guess it-
Even if I had my suspicions, for a long time I was really lost with so many names and characters that seemed to be totally unrelated and author didn't give any information about them. More than once I had to go back to the first chapters to check on names and descriptions so I could at least try to understand if they were talking about the same person or not.
NOW, the plot is amazing. I really liked it. The author have a certain something I can't describe, an ability to think of really interesting an unexpected villains. The book just kept surprising me with every page I read. Every theory I made was wrong until the very end. I loved that.
I'm really happy the story didn't get a "Disney happy ending" but a real ending instead. It would have been really stupid if, at the end, Ruby appeared from nowhere. I also like that the author doesn't give a real ending to the main "couple"'s story.
I'm not a fan of crime stories, I'm more of a paranormal books reader. But I really enjoyed the plot. I just wished the events at the beginning were faster and the resolution slower. Cos I feel like I've been getting ready for the investigation to get "intense" for over 200 pages and then, everything suddenly ends in less than 50.
There's another thing that I admire about Amanda Stevens and is the way she includes in her books a lot of topics that are normally considered "taboo".
All in all, the book was really good, just hard to get into it. It feels a bit incomplete, leaving a bitter taste that keeps me wondering about some issues that weren't solved. It might be on porpoise, it might be the author's style. I don't know, but I just ended up having a lot of questions that got no answer.
I wish I could give this book 3.5 stars. 3 is too low, 4 is too much.
