The Death of Jane Lawrence by Caitlin Starling

3.5

Frankly I am unsure what to make of this. I picked this up because I drew it from my TBR jar and knew I needed to start reading something as soon as possible after finishing The Hero of Ages or I would quite possibly not read for a few weeks, which was not what I wanted. Totally irrelevant honestly - but still that's some context. I don't super know why I bought this, I've heard pretty much only middling to negative things but gothic and inspired by Crimson Peak intrigued me.

I will be honest, I was very unsure during the first 100 pages. I made the mistake of seeing the average rating and scanning some reviews and was ready for the worst but the way things amped up for the rest of it was like, intriguing. Engaging enough that I sat in one spot and read all 350 pages in under three hours. It reminded me a lot of The Haunting of Hill House and We Have Always Lived in the Castle by Shirley Jackson and frankly I am surprised at how it all turned out. I will not pretend I understand the ending, I am warm and tired by a fire and feel quite dazed, but I think I had a good time. Wahoo.
