You Have a Friend in 10A by Maggie Shipstead

3.0

This collection started off strong with three brilliant stories in a row, "The Cowboy Tango," "Acknowledgements," and "Souterrain," but my enthusiasm went downhill for the rest of the book only to be picked up one last time by "The Great Central Pacific Guano Company."

My rating for each story:
- "The Cowboy Tango": 7/5. What an ending.
- "Acknowledgements": 5/5. Exactly the kind of piece that I only want to read as a short story.
- "Souterrain": 10/5. The best in the collection in my opinion.
- "Angel Lust": 3/5. There were too many things going on with the main character. Like, was it really necessary to show him getting aroused by his teenage daughter's underwear?
- "La Moretta": 3/5. There are some clever narrative tricks going on, but the newly-wed couple asking each other why they love each other as an inside joke got really repetitive.
- "In the Olympic Village": 1/5. Snore.
- "You Have a Friend in 10A": 1/5. A huge letdown. I'm not a fan of using trauma as a crutch for characterization.
- "The Lambs": 1/5. I can't remember anything about this story.
- "The Great Central Pacific Guano Company": 4/5. After a series of forgettable stories and one disappointing one, this story about a collective experience felt fresh.
- "Backcountry": 2/5. Again, there were too many things going on.
