The Other Side of Blue by Anna Bloom

4.0

This was definitely not the story I was expecting... it was better! Lyra is the apple of her brother, Luca's, eye. She's a nerdy violin player who's crushing after her brother's best friend and battered boy-next-door, Jack ("Blue"). Just when Blue begins to introduce Lyra to the world, he's forced to drop out of it, and Lyra mourns the loss of him for four years, not knowing if he's even alive. After Lyra receives a prestigious music scholarship, she's shocked to find Blue is assigned as her mentor. There's tension between them, Lyra not understanding where he's been for the last four years and Blue hating her for reasons that are almost painfully slowly revealed. Family secrets and money-controlled goodwill threaten to destroy the relationship they begin to put back together. Seriously...be prepared because there is a plot twist leading into the second book that you will not see coming. This book was my introduction to Anna Bloom, and I'm sure glad we're now acquainted because while I wait the next four months for the second book in this series, I'm definitely diving into some of her other stuff. Her writing is clear and the story progressed as it would've played out in realtime. Her characters are lovable but still flawed, and those are my favorite kind of character. There's definitely some emotional ups and downs to her storytelling, so be prepared for some whiplash but in a good way. Well deserving of 5 stars!
