Orpheus Girl by Brynne Rebele-Henry
5.0
Beautiful use of mythology, with carefully crafted characters. This book is deceptively short, but worth a few reads to truly absorb it all.
Despite its short read time, each of the characters are deeply complex. And not just because of the players they represent- in short breaths we get surprisingly full development.
I think some stories about the issue of conversion camps focus so much on shock horror, abusing the characters so those of us unaware will realize it’s bad. But Orpheus Girl actually cared to show the ways the characters experience, cope, numb, and feel deeply the impacts of this “therapy” years later. And how ineffective it is...how strong a spirit can be. Again...in a minuscule timeframe! Masterful, heartbreaking, wonderful.
Thank you for this book.
