Midnight Is the Darkest Hour by Ashley Winstead

mysterious tense medium-paced

4.25

I loved the gothic feel of this murder mystery. The swamps of Louisiana are such a great setting and don’t seem to be used enough in literature. The darker side of Ruth’s personality were unexpected but made her so much more inter a character so I loved that choice. I wasn’t a fan of how naive and immature she was most of the time, especially into her 20s. That’s really the only thing that brought my rating down, it made the story feel YA when nothing else had that vibe.

There were a lot of references to Twilight and I could see that being an issue for some readers, but it worked for me since I am such a fan of that series and witnessed it’s influence on girls who grew up reading it.

I can’t decide if I like the ending or want to throttle the author for it, but I’m leaning toward it being the right choice.
