John Gwynne is definitely a favorite author of mine! I said this after reading his first series, The Faithful & the Fallen, which starts with [b:Malice|15750692|Malice (The Faithful and the Fallen, #1)|John Gwynne|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1342785006l/15750692._SY75_.jpg|21444710], but I think this second series really solidified it for me!

I personally think you should read the Faithful and the Fallen series before this one because it was amazing and also the end kinda gets spoiled with this series, although if for some reason you truly wish to skip it and dive right into this one, I do think that's possible with Gwynne's amazing world-building and development of all the characters new and old!

I truly just really get along with Gwynne's writing style and his balance of action and characters! I think it's pretty hard to find a book, let alone a series, that can get you emotionally invested in characters while also never leaving you feeling bored or in need of more action, yet somehow Gwynne does this!

This series really hit me emotionally, a lot more than I was expecting. I was so deeply bonded with the characters from The Faithful and the Fallen and just hearing the characters in this series talk about them just made me miss them. It was also so cool to get to see characters again and see where they ended up! And the new cast of characters! I loved them just as much! And all of the animals!! My heart can't take so much adorableness!!

Fritha's character was one that really surprised me! I didn't think I would end up liking her as much as I did, but I think she might be one of my favorite characters?? I just really loved the way that she learned from all of her mistakes and I love how she brought out questions of morality and what's right and wrong. Also, her creations were just super cool and creepy and I loved them!

Overall, if it wasn't already clear, I love the way Gwynne writes his characters and I think the way the characters develop throughout this series is so great!

Specifically, in this last book, I cried. That ending. I am in emotional distress. I was definitely not expecting certain things to go the way they did but I think it really worked and showed off more of the friendship bonds that are so important in this whole series! Another thing that I really love is how fast-paced these books are and how quick they are to get into the action!

Just read these books already!!! They're great and I love them so much!!
