Given the premise of the book I thought I'd enjoy it more than I ultimately did.  When Fanny's husband came home safely from the war she thought life was settled; they had a home, started a family and were doing well.  However his sudden death turns life on its head and she finds herself a single mother in the 1940s, yet not able to financially support them both.

I felt more could have been made of the character of her cheerleading aunt Rose who ultimately encourages her to go back out to work as a secretary for a radio producer.  In the time of the blacklists a writer Fanny has become friendly with finds himself on that list and she ultimately agrees to become his "front" and present his work as her own, then they work together to produce award winning shows - quelle surprise.

Of course we HAVE to have a love triangle to lay out the social mores of the time, that married women should not work, but it all felt quite forced and I didn't love any of the characters.

This was an OK read that I did ultimately finish but it could have been so much more
