As Long as the Lemon Trees Grow by Zoulfa Katouh

5.0

I finished this book a few days ago and wanted to sit with my thoughts before writing a review. I'm still struggling to find a way to accurately describe how much this book impacted me.

Lemon Trees is without a doubt, one of the best books I have read this year. It completely and totally devastated me, bringing with it a huge emotional toll throughout the entire read, but lifted me through to hope and happiness at various times. It was a whirlwind of emotions, to say the least.

Before I began this book, I didn't know much about the Syrian Revolution. Lemon Trees opened my eyes to the total devastation and loss that has occurred for the Syrian people. Zoulfa's words were a puncture to the heart.

While this is listed as YA, I urge everyone to take a chance on Lemon Trees. There is a ton of heavy content, but as you read through Salama's story, the heaviness becomes imperative to understanding her journey through a horrific time in history. Zoulfa's writing will draw you in, and you'll stay for all the wonderful characters to which you'll 100% get attached.

Lemon Trees reminded me of The Kite Runner (Khaled Hosseini) and The Mountains Sing (Nguyễn Phan Quế Mai), so if either of those are/were of interest to you then you should give this book a try!
