The One and Only Ivan by Katherine Applegate

5.0

Augh! Loved it, loved it, loved it! What an amazing heart-wrenching story. I just say the beginning of my friend Liz's review, and I felt the same way about a book for kids with a gorilla and an elephant on the cover: it's going to be lame. I was SO wrong, and now I am so happy to spread the joy. This book broke my heart and then gently pieced it back together.

This is a book to introduce humans to infinite potential of humanity. It also covers animal cruelty, deep friendships, trauma, love, imperfect humans, and the silver lining of the darkest clouds. The writing is spare and beautiful. The voices of the characters are perfectly drawn. If David Sedaris's "Squirrel Meets Chimpmunk" is half this good at allowing you to better understand humans through the lens of animals, I'll have died and gone to Borges's heaven.

"It is never to late to become what you might have been." This is the kind of book I want to give to every person I see. Read it, read it, read it.

I also read the last part of my friend Liz's review. I also cried my big beautiful-reading-an-amazing-book-and-must-drip-snot-out-my-nose tears. Sobtastic!
