Oh wow. I should probably sit with this one for a bit before writing my review, but it took me so long to get through this book, I desperately want to be done with it. Not because it was bad, but because it was heavy and it brought up so many feelings for me as an African American women born and raised in the South.
It became extremely clear to me as I read the many stories of these characters that this was a Black Feminist novel. Oh my. I can’t even begin to understate how clearly that fact was made. The women in this family…they suffered, they persevered, they carried. So many times I wanted to beg them to leave behind the men who harmed them, if only because they could and their ancestors couldn’t.
It also made me think about what we’ve lost in modern times with our disconnection from the land we live and how much knowledge we’ve lost.
Agh! I have so many thoughts about this book.
