The Favorite Sister by Jessica Knoll
5.0
I'm going to say from the beginning that The Favorite Sister is not going to be for everyone. It's set on a reality TV show, and there's a lot of pettiness & backstabbing happening. However this book is going to work for some people, and I'm one of them. I found this book to be so damn entertaining, and I loved it.
This is not a thriller. It's a drama with a mystery, and at its core, a character study of successful women who maybe didn't make the best choices to find their success.
The Favorite Sister gave me a lot of things to think about, and this was a very layered story to me. I'm not going to go into it to avoid spoilers, but I'm just going to say that, for example, it made me reflect on how we relate to other women in regards to success. I loved seeing the characters unravel, and the women I thought I knew at the beginning of the book were not the same ones at the end. You never really know anyone, and this book shows how easy it is to deceive.
There are so many intriguing topics in this book - success, class, race, body positivity, fame, friendship, secrets, etc. Jessica Knoll did a great job at trying to cover different aspects of life as a modern woman. The book is quite self-aware, and I was surprised by multiple insightful passages in the book (since it's a book about a reality show). I had a lot of fun with this book.
I would recommend this book for fans of books like The Last Mrs. Parrish, Lie to Me, The Wife Between Us, and The Perfect Mother. Thank you so much to the publisher for sending me an early copy. The Favorite Sister will be out on 5/15.
