After reading quite a few reviews of this book (because I genuinely had no idea how to start reviewing it myself), it seems that this book is one that folks either love or hate. AND I GET IT. I could honestly make valid points for giving this book five stars and equally valid points for giving it one star. It's the most bizarre book I think I've ever read, and I truly do not know if I liked it or not.
IF one could suspend their disbelief and throw all of their morals out the window and go into this knowing and accepting that it is downright weird, one could probably really enjoy this roller coaster of a ridiculous romance novel. It's quirky and funny and could potentially be wildly entertaining with the right headspace. BUT THE VIBES! First of all, if this was written by a man with a woman-corpse love interest, WE WOULD BE SCREAMING. Second, the necromancy of it all? Third, it got so close to a strong, independent female lead, but then sexy man = all she cares about is babies? Also, the mild attempts at political and religious commentary were wildly out of place and completely unnecessary to what it felt like the author was going for.
All of that, and still. Did I hate it? Not really. Did I like it? Kind of? It's certainly not a book I will be forgetting any time soon. And really, truly, if I can just take a step back from my 2023 feminist beliefs, it was kind of a really fun guilty-pleasure read.... in which I do in fact feel guilty over taking pleasure.
