In this sequel Emily and Wendell have returned to Cambridge and are trying to hide his faerie lineage from their colleagues. As the attacks from his home country increase, this gets harder to do. So, Emily comes up with a plan to try and find the door to his kingdom so they can attempt to challenge Wendell’s stepmother.
Throughout, we see the growing affection between Emily and Wendell. Each appears to see the other as a means of helping them, whether personally or in their academic studies. It was also entertaining to see how their developing relationship was dealt with by their friends and associates.
With the focus being on finding their way to somewhere few dare to go, there was plenty of action to show how dangerous what they were doing was. Shadow came into his own, but with Wendell mostly incapacitated after being poisoned it was good to see Emily be a bit more involved in things.
While I enjoyed this, it really did feel that the extra details given were to act as something of a diversion and there’s a long way to go before we see their relationship moved onto a more stable footing.
