Why Marx Was Right by Terry Eagleton
4.0
Divided into ten chapters, Why Marx Was Right answers ten common objections to Marxism. These objections include, more or less:
1. Marxism is outdated
2. Marxism is impractical
3. Marxism is deterministic
4. Marxism is idealistic
5. Marxism is reductive, seeing human activity only through economic lenses
6. Marxism is anti-religious
7. Marxism is wrong about class warfare since we now have a middle class
8. Marxism is violent
9. Marxism is authoritarian
10. Marxism is patriarchal, orientalist, racist, etc. when viewed in light of other critical lenses
I was familiar with most of the arguments here before but was surprised to see how charitable Eagleton was towards capitalism. Though he notes capitalism's exploitative nature, he points out that capitalism is a necessary step towards Socialism.
Eagleton therefore condemns the Maoist and Russian revolutions as premature. These revolutions were necessary, but they should've allowed capitalism to create the necessary economic conditions first.
I will admit that I view Marx more favorably after reading this book. I think Marx's alternative to late capitalism is worth pursuing, considering the direction the US is heading towards.
