» PLOT «
Isobel's paintings are magnificent, but her buyers are the dangerous fair folk. These fair folk are immortal, but can't create or craft anything, or risk crumbling to dust. So Rook, the autumn prince, commissions Isobel to paint a portrait of him, but Isobel makes a fatal mistake in painting human sorrow into his eyes. As a result, he takes her to his kingdom to stand trial for her crimes. But as odd things begin to occur, they must rely on each other for their survival.
Not gonna lie, I don't think I read this book closely enough to really know why some of the things that happened, happened. Like (view spoiler)
I was also not a fan of the fact that since (view spoiler) It felt cheap and juvenile. I understand that (view spoiler)
Other than that, I felt like this book, for a fantasy, was surprisingly realistic. The world was fantastical, but the events and people felt real.
» READABILITY «
This book was short, so it felt fast, but I would still consider this book as being more medium paced, in the format of a fast paced book.
Regardless of the pace, it was really easy to read.
» CHARACTERS «
I actually both like and dislike some of the characters, but for all of the same reasons. I feel like they are both realistic and so odd at the same time. It may just be the fair folk/background characters that feel odd, and the the main characters feel more realistic.
In the beginning, I really liked Isobel as a character, but then I started to dislike her as the book went along.
» WRITING «
The writing is pretty good. It's a good balance between flowery and straightforward. It had a nice flow and made reading more enjoyable.
» OVERALL «
I had a hard time writing this review, and I have a feeling that I might come back to it. I just didn't have any adverse feelings towards it. It wasn't fantastic, but it wasn't bad.
I really expected to enjoy this book, and the beginning was doing so well, but then the plot lost me half way through. I might consider rereading next year.
