The Brightest Light of Sunshine by Lisina Coney
4.0
Rating: 4/5 Penguins
Quick Reasons: realistic, compelling motivations; stubborn, lovable characters; entertaining, easy to devour read; all the same delicious "romance" plot points/tropes; mind the triggers; if you don't scream at this book at least once, what are you even doing?
HUGE thanks to Lisina Coney, Page and Vine Books, and luvbooksclub for sending a copy of this title my way! My review of this book is voluntarily written and in no way altered or impacted by this gesture.
She's such a sight, eating a juicy hot dog in a tight black party dress with her immaculate skin and her slightly untamed blonde hair. I wish I could capture this moment forever, but I don't think we've crossed the taking-pictures-of-each-other line yet.
I'm a patient man, though. And I have the feeling that everything related to Grace Allen will be worth the wait.
First and foremost--mind the triggers in the blurb, please, Penguins, and take care of YOU and YOUR health and safety first! With that said... This is a spunky, cute, devour-worthy read and I am SO happy I was given the chance to pick it up! The characters are charming, with that "grumpy/sunshine" aesthetic I've always loved (even though I only just this year found out was an actual REAL trope). Cal is THE epitome of a grumpy cinnamon roll and is bound to end up on my list of "top bookish baes" for the year. Grace is quirky, vivid, and full of trauma--a total juxtaposition I was not expecting, going into this read (I go into books almost totally blind, Penguins...don't fault me for that, it works for me!)
The story is believable and well-paced. The normal romance "tropes"/plot points are scattered throughout the read--first act "meet cute," second act "he falls first," third act "miscommunication/break up", fourth act "forgiveness and reconciliation." Still, Lisina Coney's writing more than made up for that, keeping me entertained and hooked throughout.
He gives me a small, sheepish smile I can't look away from. "All beautiful things in life need the sun to bloom and thrive. We might not know each other very well yet, but I have no doubt you're the brightest light of sunshine, Grace."
If you're looking for a quirky, steamy read with a backstory of trauma, look no further! I recommend this to all the romance reader girlies, those who are looking for their next bookish "boyfriend," and lovers of -- well, LOVE, of course! Are you ready to be bathed in the brightest light of sunshine, Penguins? Let's see if this read will do that for you!
