Annie Bot by Sierra Greer
4.25
I love a good AI and robot story and I couldn’t wait to read Annie Bot. I enjoy the whole exploration of what it means to be human, what the experience may seem from the POV of the AI, and even the more sinister robots-taking-over-the-world concepts. Annie Bot didn’t quite touch on all of that, but it did explore the concept of being owned and not being free, not being real.
I really enjoyed Annie Bot for most of the story. It really hit the nail on the head for abuse and the different kinds of emotional manipulation in relationships and it was made worse by the fact that no one had to even consider Annie’s perspective since she wasn’t human. But she was autodidact and learning how to be more human. While she didn’t experience pain or emotions the way humans do, she had responses and reactions and confusions that resembled and seemed to feel like emotions.
I loathed Doug with a burning passion and I hated how he treated Annie.
I was disappointed by the turn of events at the lake and everything that happened after. I wanted Annie to make different and more shocking decisions and the direction of the story from that point just sort of fell flat for me. While I think the book did a great job of showcasing what it might be like to be with a person who emotionally manipulated and abused their significant other, I wished it was a bit more bold and shocking with the way it handled those concepts in the end. I definitely recommend it and I’m glad I read it. The audiobook was fantastic.
