I loved a lot of things about this book-the writing, the unique idea, the accuracy, the writing (worth mentioning twice) and I understand why so many readers loved it. I’m usually a fan of complicated family drama, but there were a couple ways that part didn’t hit right for me and it’s a huge part of the plot so that’s why it wasn’t 5 stars for me. The narrator’s “voice” felt younger than his age and the mixed messages about the father/son relationship was an unnecessary hindrance to the ultimate resolution. While these things kept Whalefall from being a new favorite, it was a thoroughly enjoyable read.
