Notes of a Crocodile by Qiu Miaojin

5.0

I never thought I would give 5 stars to a book as angsty as this. I think this novel uses angst in a very fitting way: young, idealistic, intelligent lesbian woman (the narrator) living in a homophobic society is bound to explode and deliver the most melodramatic tirades, and her series of unhealthy romantic relationships don't help much. The writing is fairly crude, but it effectively digs into the protagonist's psyche - allowing me to sympathize with her - and highlights the extreme but hidden madness homophobia can induce in a queer person. Also, experimental writing style!
