The Handmaid's Tale by Margaret Atwood

5.0

I am ashamed that it’s taken me this long to pick up The Handmaid’s Tale, a book my friend told me to read five years ago! I don’t know what took me so long. I knew this would be a book I would love. And oh wow was I right.

The Handmaid’s Tale is like nothing I’ve ever read in the most unbelievable way. It’s the story of Offred and her present situation, with bits and pieces of the past woven in. It is addictive and terrifying all at the same time. I got stuck in within a few pages, and I just wanted to read and read and read and learn more. I was so fascinated by the whole idea. I read huge chunks at a time. I couldn’t stop myself.

The society in The Handmaid’s Tale is so foreign to us, but so believable, and that’s where the true terror lies. That’s why so many are fascinated with this story and can read it over and over again. It’s because we can see how something like this could happen. It’s because we’re afraid.

Offred is a great narrator, and I was rooting for her at all times. The loneliness that seeped into the narrative without being directly mentioned was phenomenal. And I felt every ounce of it. I lived inside this book from start to finish.

What can I say? I loved every page. It was gripping and terrifying and captivating. A must-read.
