A Novel Love Story by Ashley Poston

3.5

After a heavy magical realism read then a heart racing crime fiction I was in need of something lighter, a romance was just the ticket. I was very excited to pick up Ashley Poston's new read, ready to immerse myself in one of her unique premises.

Here's what I enjoyed:
-The premise of the story, it was just as unique and quirky as I imagined. Falling into the quaint town written by your favourite romance author, meeting all the characters and experiencing all the things - so good!
-The commentary of romance novels and the stigma that exists around them even though it is the top selling genre. I think the author did a good job of also exploring why this genre is such a popular release for some readers.
- The exploration of how authors hand their work over to their readers once the work is published and how their words and stories live on in the readers, this mixed with the theme of grief was a great pairing.
-The ending, I added a whole extra half star because it completely lifted the book for me.

What I didn't enjoy:
-I think the chemistry and the romance between Anders and Elsy wasn't very strong for me. I get it was meant to be grumpy sunshine, but it missed the mark for me.
-The overuse of the word "mint/minty" eyes. I swear I nearly threw the book. It was used multiple times per chapter and irritated me so much.
-There was a lot of characters and these characters had a lot of connections that the narrator (Elsy) knew the insides and outsides of. I felt like I needed a map or a list, there was a lot of characters for a small read and it was a little tricky to keep track of everyone.

Overall I am glad that I read this book and persisted until the very end, but it didn't quite reach its potential.
