Ring Shout by P. Djèlí Clark

5.0

So much happened in Ring Shout in a short amount of pages. I absolutely loved how P. Djèlí Clark managed to develop the world-building and introduce the characters during the first few pages. There was so much detail and emotion right there and those scenes did a fantastic job at setting up the main conflict in the story as well as its overall tone.

Maryse was a wonderful narrator and the journey she went through here was a difficult one. The writing was so engrossing and I loved how Clark was able to address so many different subjects through Maryse's perspective and her experiences in the world. How that tied to the horror genre was my absolute most favorite part in the book and there were so many creepy scenes with some messed up imagery to help with that!

The ending also worked perfectly for me. It was a tipping point in regard to Maryse's character development and really hammered home the final message in the story. This was a fun read all around and I really appreciated this alternate take on history :D
