What Happened To You?: Conversations on Trauma, Resilience, and Healing by Bruce D. Perry, Oprah Winfrey

This book is fascinating and eye-opening on many different levels. Its larger point is to show how much easier people can heal when, instead of looking at their behavior and asking, "What's wrong with you?" we instead take a step back and ask, "What happened to you?" It really takes a step back in order to understand that "What happened to you" quite literally changes your brain and has everything to do with your behavior, your reactions (to people and environments), and your ability to build and maintain relationships. It discusses the difference between trauma-ignorant treatment and trauma-aware treatment. Everything is interconnected, and most of our doctors and therapists treat symptoms, but that isn't a long-term solution and can, in fact, cause more damage over time. It gets way deeper than that, I'm really the skimming the surface here, but overall it was enlightening and really forced me to think about things not just in regards to others, but within myself as well. I think this is an absolute must-read, especially for teachers, bosses, really anybody in any kind of authoritative role.
