The Piper's Son by Melina Marchetta

5.0

Love this author's talent for family dynamics. She writes people who are human and flawed and I like them in spite of those flaws. And I love how she kind of leaves hints of things or little bits of detail out at first and then later reveals more and more, until you get the whole story in the end. I want to say how I felt about certain parts of the story but I am afraid I'll spoil what I feel like she intended for every reader to discover on their own. I'll make a comment about something in the spoilers, read at your own discretion! It's not so much a big reveal, it's just that the author does not specify it at first and the book jacket doesn't, either.

SpoilerI was living in England in 2005, when the bombing happened. Of course I felt for all of the victims and their families but what does that mean, really? What happened to Joe and his family as a result shed some light on what those families may have gone through and it was just heart-breaking to read. It's just so sad and heavy, some of the things in this book but I loved reading it all.
