Gentleman Jole and the Red Queen by Lois McMaster Bujold

4.0

I've seen a lot of mixed reviews of this book but after reading the entire Vorkosigan saga through in order this one certainly is a capstone worthy of some praise. I think some of the subject matter might be difficult to swallow for certain people (bisexual relationships, polygamy, etc, an otherwise perfect father figure having a flaw) but if you're able to step past the first non-hurdle you find a fitting end to the Vorkosigan world. The book has a slightly more grown up feel to it as Miles is 44 now and finds out that his father who he has spent his entire life trying to fill the shoes of perhaps was human after all. His mother, now a widow, finds herself able to move on after finding a safe space within the arms of a person dealing with exactly the same trauma. Leaving the space battles and political intruige behind, this book delivers a much more mature tone about death, grief, and coping. All in all, solid read.
