N0S4A2 by Joe Hill
5.0
"And he paddled away in his douche canoe"
Let's not talk about my choice of quotes. (some minor spoilers in review)
Joe Hill is my favourite author, his books are always thought out, fast paced and full of intrigue. NOS4A2 is no disappointment!
The story follows two stories that collide. One being of Charlie Max; a vampire (of sorts) who kidnaps children from abusive (or soon to be abusive) homes and takes them to Christmasland (a land full of fun and happiness, forever). The other is Vic McQueen; she always finds what's she looking for (sounds simple enough but it involves a bridge that no-one else can see).
Charlie and Vic have this matching ~power~ of sorts; the ability to use their thoughts to get what the want. Charlie can create his own inscape (world from his mind) whereas Vic can go wherever she wants, to whatever she wants, with her thoughts and trusty bike.
You follow the stories of Charlie and some of his children, Vic and her first meeting (and narrow escape) of Charlie.
And then Charlie is dead, it's over right? Wrong. Skip ahead a few years. Vic is a mess, her son doesn't really know her that well, she's been in and out of mental institutions and her life is basically in the crapper.
Along comes Charlie Manx once again, only thing time he has something of hers; her son Wayne.
And that's where I'm stopping with the storyline of this review because I don't want to ruin it; but the ending was wonderful!
I love Joe's writing style, he's too the point and yet descriptive with every chapter. It's fast paced and easy to read; like all of Hill's books.
Basically this book is easily in my second favourite of Hill's (after Heart-Shaped Box of course). I did take my time reading it; mainly because parts of it scared the hell out of me (ever let me read a book with a scene in a morgue right before bed ever again!)
I love his acknowledgements! The Nice List is lovely and The Naughty List ... excellent!
And now I'm going to shut up and hope that this review makes everyone go read this mans amazing work!
