Vampire of the Mists by Christie Golden
4.0
A tale of a reluctant, heartbroken vampire. Transported by his own rage and grief to Barovia (think Transylvania) and ultimately into a bond with the ancient vampire lord Count Strahd von Zarovich.
Besides being an entertaining gothic horror adventure read, the source material for both Ravenloft DMs and players is spot on.
For DMs there’s a lot to borrow in terms of atmosphere: the poisonous mist that transports your players through domains, the gypsy-like Vistani characteristics and mythology, Strahd’s character, Castle Ravenloft itself (both imagery and layout), vampires, werewolves, skeletons, and the forms and habits of such NPCs.
For players there is inspiration on dealing with the challenges of Ravenloft and what might be expected when your character is sent through the mists to a Domain of Dread.
If you have never played or even heard of Ravenloft, there is a lot to enjoy here. If you are in need of a gothic horror comfort read, the one is for you.
