if there is one thing you need to know about me, it is that i will always read and love any book written by malinda lo (i say as i have only read two of her books)
this was a coming of age summer story following aria as she spends time with her grandmother in california during the supreme court decisions to legalize gay marriage.
lo's writing is just incredibly profound, in my opinion. this book in particularity was so cinematic? the way she would write things drew me in and i could *see* the book so vividly. i love the way lo's writing just draws you in.
also the way lo depicts sapphic women just speaks directly to me and it's like she scooped some of my soul out and put it into her books? idk how to describe it but the way she writes queer women make me feel incredibly seen and it just soothes me okay✋
anyways, i just finished this book like twenty minutes ago and i am still stewing in the things it made me feel, which was a lot. the ending especially hit me hard, not to spoil anything but the sudden and quick loss just spoke to me really hard. this book was so good, this and 'last night at the telegraph club' will forever be special to me (queer history bro!) and malinda lo is a godsend to queer books, and to BOOKS overall.
much love xx
